  • How to Maintain your New Flute [5 Ways]

Have a new flute that you want to keep playing well for years to come? Here are 5 things we recommend you do: Regular Cleaning Reduce Moisture Oiling Proper Storage Regular Checkups Want to shop for cases, oils, cleaning supplies and more? You can find those here Learn more about how each of these recommendations can help you extend the lifespan of your flute below: 1. Regular Cleaning: Wiping down your flute with a clean cloth each time you play is a great start, but nothing helps keep your flute playing quite like a thorough cleaning. We recommend our Spiffy Kit complete with a flute swab, key oil, silver polishing cloth, duster brush, pad paper, and an anti-tarnish strip to really scrub out all the moisture, dirt, and debris, and keep the flute looking shiny and new. 2. Reduce Moisture: Cleaning out your flute with a swab is a great first step to reducing moisture. We also recommend using pad paper or a Spit Sponge after playing or if you observe your pads sticking to the tone hole to absorb excess moisture settling into the pads. While you're at it, you may want to use a pad saver to help absorb any excess moisture in your instrument long term. 3. Lubrication: Your keys should run as smoothly as possible to ensure you can hit the right notes every time. Oil your key mechanisms as needed if you start feeling resistance when pressing down keys, but don't over-lubricate them as this can gum up the key work and require a professional cleaning. We love this key oil and so do band directors. 4. Proper Storage: At home or on stage you may want to want use a flute stand like this one for easy access, but if you're thinking about traveling with or storing your flute you want to consider if you're looking for something durable or something lightweight and padded. We love this one and this one. Keep your instrument as safe as possible. 5. Regular Checkups: Checkups are necessary to keep your flute playing just the way you like it. Playing your flute often, regular wear and tear, travel, and more can cause your instrument to fall out of adjustment, result in a buildup of debris inside the flute, and more. Woodwind technicians take special care to clean, adjust, remove dents, recork, replace pads, and can help address any concerns you may have. We hope your new flute brings you joy for years to come. Taking care of your instrument can be fun, fulfilling, and allow you to spend more time playing and less time in the repair shop. Does your flute need an adjustment? Schedule a repair

  • How to Maintain your New Guitar [5 Easy Steps]

Have a new guitar that you want to keep in tip top playing condition? Here are 5 things we recommend you do: Wipe down and polish Humidify Change strings regularly Proper storage Regular setups Want to shop for strings, straps, humidifiers and more? You can find those here Learn more about how each of these recommendations can help you extend the lifespan of your guitar below: 1. Wipe down and polish: Oils, dirt, and sweat all have the potential to damage the finish of your guitar, which is why wiping down and polishing your guitar often is essential to keeping it looking like new. 2. Humidify: From the factory, to our store, and then to your door. Your new guitar has undergone many different humidity changes already. Guitars are most commonly made of wood which tends to shrink and swell with the level of moisture in the air. We keep the guitars in our store humidified to ensure that they play consistently, and don't run the risk of warping, cracking, or worse. 3. Change strings regularly: There's nothing like the feel of a new set of strings. Older strings tend to oxidize, become grimy, and lose their bright tone. Depending on how much you play it's a good idea to change out your strings every few months. This is also a great opportunity to clean and oil up your fretboard. 4. Proper storage: Many people like to keep their guitar out on a stand for regular use, but if you're thinking about storing or traveling with your guitar there are a few different factors to consider. For closet storage we love these padded hanging bags. They're slim, cushy, and have extra storage for strings, straps, and picks. If you're traveling a hard case is a safer option as they're more impact resistant and provide neck stability. 5. Regular setups: Setups are necessary to keep your guitar playing just the way you like it. Using your guitar often, changes in weather, travel, and more can cause your instrument to fall out of adjustment. Luthiers take special care to adjust the neck, bridge, and string height to your specifications, and can help address any concerns you may have. We hope your new guitar lasts a lifetime. Taking care of your instrument can be fun, fulfilling, and allow you to spend more time playing and less time in the repair shop. Does your guitar need an adjustment? Schedule a setup
