Local Spotlight - MattstaGraham

local spotlight znora band tucson

MattstaGraham is a Tucson based, emo, pop punk revival project that you may or may not have seen in your for you page on TikTok or while you were mindlessly scrolling through Instagram.

Matt's online content has gone viral more times than you can say "Welcome to the Black Parade" at an emo trivia night, and are (unfortunately relatable) earworms that you'll be singing all day. And maybe the next day.

We asked Matt 5 questions about their experience as musician in Tucson. Here's what they said:

What's your favorite venue to play in Tucson?

The great part about Tucson is that we have a lot of great venues so it’s hard to pick! I think my current favorite is Groundworks. I’ve played there a bunch as MattstaGraham and it’s really starting to feel like a second home.

What's the funniest thing that's happened during a performance?

Oh man. I once had a guitar break a bunch of strings at once so I decided to put it down in an attempt to just sing the rest of the song and grab a back up. What ACTUALLY happened was I grabbed the mic, the chord fell out, I couldn’t find it on the floor, and I tripped and ate it in front of everyone. I wish I had footage, it was a beautiful disaster.

What's your first memory as a musician?

I remember the first time I picked up a guitar. One of my uncles had visited and brought me and my brothers some of those cheap nylon string guitars like the ones you could win at the fair. It was like a direct gateway to me deciding I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

What's your favorite song to perform?

It always changes but right now it’s between "Snack Black" and "Avoiding The Issue." They’re just super fun songs to play live.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

“If you wanna give god a good laugh, tell him your plans.” I’m not religious, but this is very applicable to anyone. You can’t control what happens, just how you adapt to it.
